UNICEF Maldives has extended the deadline for youth applications to participate in a mock Conference of the Parties (COP) session, scheduled to be held from 7 to 9 October 2024 in Malé.

The three-day event will focus on climate diplomacy, negotiation strategies, and the COP process, providing a unique opportunity for young Maldivians to enhance their knowledge and leadership skills in environmental issues.

The session is organised in partnership with the Ministry of Climate Change, Environment, and Energy and the Office of the Special Envoy for Climate Change. It will bring together 25 youth participants from across the Maldives, ensuring a balance in age, gender, and geographical representation. The deadline for applications has been extended to Friday, 13 September 2024, at 23:55hrs.

Participants will also have the chance to compete for an opportunity to represent the Maldives at the 29th United Nations Climate Change Conference (COP29), which will be held in Baku, Azerbaijan, from 11 to 22 November 2024. Two participants from the mock session will be selected to join the official Maldivian delegation at COP29.

Eligible applicants must be between 18 and 30 years old and demonstrate a strong interest in climate change, sustainable development, and international relations. They must also be willing to attend an online orientation session on 3 October and travel to Malé for the in-person event. UNICEF Maldives will cover transportation, accommodation, and meals for participants who are not residents of Malé.

This initiative is part of broader efforts to empower youth and foster active participation in global climate discussions.

Interested youth can apply for the mock COP session by submitting a google form.
