The Waste Management Corporation Limited (WAMCO) has expanded its waste management services to Dhidhdhoo in Haa Alifu Atoll, further extending its network across the country.

The service was officially launched on Saturday by the Minister of Tourism and Environment, Thoriq Ibrahim, during a ceremony held on the island. The minister highlighted that WAMCO’s presence in Dhidhdhoo would benefit the environment while also improving the health and wellbeing of residents and supporting local businesses.

The expansion follows a pledge by President Dr Mohamed Muizzu to accelerate the introduction of WAMCO’s services in Dhidhdhoo. This commitment was made during a recent visit to the island as part of a tour of several islands in the atoll.

Minister Thoriq emphasised the importance of instilling sustainable waste management practices from a young age. He noted that children, particularly school students, play a crucial role in encouraging safe waste management. By providing them with the necessary knowledge, household waste could be better segregated, making overall waste management more efficient.

WAMCO’s Managing Director, Mujthaba Jaleel, reiterated the company’s commitment to expanding its services nationwide. He stated that island councils typically collect household waste and deposit it at designated areas on the beach. However, once these areas reach capacity, councils face challenges in disposing of the waste. He stressed that partnering with WAMCO allows councils to transfer waste to designated management sites, ensuring proper disposal.

In addition to WAMCO’s efforts, the government has introduced a national waste management plan aimed at implementing environmentally friendly practices at every stage of waste disposal. The plan seeks to provide a long-term solution to the country’s waste management challenges, ensuring sustainability and efficiency in waste handling across the nation.
