The Waste Management Corporation Ltd. (WAMCO) has announced a reduction in gate fees for privately operated waste collection vehicles and the integration of waste collection charges with electricity bills across all islands where the corporation provides services.

Effective 1 January 2025, the gate fee for privately operated waste collection vehicles accessing WAMCO’s facilities will decrease significantly. The fee, which serves as an admission charge, will drop from USD 13.75 to USD 6.88 per metric tonne.

In a further development, WAMCO will extend its initiative to combine waste collection charges with electricity bills to all serviced islands. This approach builds on a previous collaboration with the State Electric Company Ltd. (STELCO), which introduced the system for households in Malé City. For islands where the electricity supply is managed by FENAKA Corporation Ltd., waste collection charges will be included in FENAKA’s billing system.

WAMCO currently provides waste collection services in Malé City, Fonadhoo in Laamu Atoll, Maafushi in Kaafu Atoll, and Himmafushi in Kaafu Atoll. While the company has not previously initiated billing for these services in these areas, the new system will enable customers to see waste collection charges reflected in their electricity bills starting in January.

According to WAMCO, the cost of waste collection services is approximately USD 9.73 per household. Businesses are charged around USD 0.013 per litre of waste collected daily, while the revised gate fee for waste management facilities will be USD 6.88 per metric tonne.

The government of President Dr Mohamed Muizzu has prioritised sustainable waste management as a key policy focus. As part of these efforts, a comprehensive strategy has been launched to ensure household waste collection and transportation are conducted in an environmentally responsible manner. This initiative aims to enhance waste management systems and raise public awareness of sustainable practices.

In addition to servicing inhabited islands, WAMCO also provides waste collection and management services to tourist resorts, supporting environmental sustainability within the tourism sector.
