WDC Members to Receive Ramadan Allowance Starting Next Year, Says Muizzu
Whilst addressing residents of Dhan’gethi during his current tour of South Ari Atoll islands, President Dr Mohamed Muizzu announced that Women’s Development Committee (WDC) members will receive Ramadan allowance from next year onwards.
Speaking at the meeting, Muizzu acknowledged the unfair treatment WDCs had faced due to existing legal provisions and stated that whilst their concerns had been previously raised, the administration required extensive research to form solutions.
Addressing the matter, Muizzu revealed that the Government will propose amendments to the Decentralisation and Employment Act when Parliament reconvenes. These changes aim to ensure WDC members receive proper salaries and Ramadan allowance while qualifying for various financial institution schemes.
He confirmed these amendments would be implemented in time for members to receive their first Ramadan allowance during the upcoming holiday.
During the meeting, Muizzu also discussed the newly ratified Foreign Currency Bill, emphasising that once enacted, the legislation will benefit the public by permitting dollar transactions and doubling credit card limits.
He further stated that work is in progress to introduce amendments requiring a percentage of local tourism revenue to be transferred directly to councils. This initiative aims to enhance the financial independence of councils by granting them direct access to tourism tax revenue.
