Local non-governmental organisation (NGO) Wellness Matters is gearing up to celebrate the first anniversary of its ‘Plant a Tree’ initiative.
Launched with the objective of promoting the cultivation of fruits and vegetables among individuals, this project has gained notable traction over the past year.
The commemorative event marking this one-year milestone is set to commence at 05:00 pm on Monday. To ensure widespread participation, the event will be accessible through digital platforms such as Zoom, Facebook, and SSTV.
Participants from various regions across the Maldives, including schools and officials from the Education Ministry, who have partake in the ‘Plant a Tree’ initiative, will be part of the event on Zoom.
Wellness Matters, under the leadership of its founder, Zulfa Naseer, embarked on this journey with the aim of sharing the insights gained from a wellness program she attended with WellnessExpert Malaysia. Their initial endeavour, a 21-day fitness challenge, faced challenges linked to the availability of fruits and vegetables in the program’s meal plan.
In response, Zulfa Naseer began advocating the advantages of chemical-free produce and encouraged individuals to grow their own fruits and vegetables. This led to the expansion of the initiative into the ‘Plant a Tree’ project, which was officially launched on October 16, 2022, in conjunction with World Food Day.
Currently, the project operates across 17 islands in 14 atolls, involving the active participation of 33 private citizens, nine institutions, and 18 schools.
