Yameen Calls for Audit of Male’ City Council Amid Corruption Claims
Former President Abdulla Yameen has called for a thorough audit of the Malé City Council to investigate alleged financial irregularities since its inception.
Yameen’s demand follows accusations of corruption during the tenure of President Mohamed Muizzu, who previously served as Mayor of Malé City.
Speaking to his supporters at his party’s office on Monday, Yameen criticised the Audit Office for its inaction and questioned the accountability of the city council’s financial operations.
“The biggest problem is, why is a place with such a large capital not being audited? Where is the Auditor General, and what is he doing?” Yameen asked.
He underlined the importance of financial transparency, especially given the significant state budget allocations to the council.
The controversy focuses on allegations of irregular spending during Muizzu’s time as mayor. A Progressive National Congress (PNC) activist reportedly alleged that MVR 3.4 million was allocated for repairs to the new cemetery mosque, with an additional MVR 4.1 million spent. These claims have raised concerns about the management of public funds.
Yameen called for an investigation into not only the current council’s financial practices but also the actions of previous administrations. He asserted that transparency was vital to restoring public trust.
The opposition leader also expressed concern over what he described as a lack of oversight by constitutional bodies and urged swift action to address the issue.
