The request to form the PNF was submitted by Yameen’s aides on Monday, and the commission deliberated on the matter during a meeting held today.
The official letter of permission was accepted on behalf of the PNF by Dr. Mohamed Jameel Ahmed, Yameen’s former vice president, and Mohamed Maleeh Jamal, who served as the science minister in Yameen’s cabinet.
As part of the approval process, the PNF is now required to submit a minimum of 3,000 membership forms to the ECM within the next three months.
The former president has chosen eight individuals as the founding members of the party, including himself, his son Zain, former vice president Dr. Mohamed Jameel Ahmed. However, due to ECM regulations permitting only one founder, Zain has been designated as the official founder.
Yameen’s departure from the Progressive Party of Maldives (PPM), a party he led for many years, occurred last week amid escalating conflicts within the PPM-PNC coalition. This development took place just under a week into President Dr. Mohamed Muizzu’s administration.
