Former Maldivian president Abdulla Yameen has formally requested the Prosecutor General’s Office (PGO) to review the criminal cases filed against him.

This comes after the PGO opened applications on 1 October for a review of charges and detention orders filed during the tenure of former prosecutor general Hussain Shameem. By the 20 October deadline, the PGO reported receiving 539 review requests.

Yameen’s legal team, led by his former vice president and lawyer Dr. Mohamed Jameel Ahmed, confirmed that a review of the charges against the former leader was sought, though details on the nature of the request were not disclosed.

Yameen faces multiple allegations of money laundering, primarily linked to the Maldives Marketing and Public Relations Corporation (MMPRC) scandal, regarded as the largest corruption case in the nation’s history.

Throughout these proceedings, Yameen has denied the accusations, asserting his commitment to proving his innocence through a fair trial process.
