Former President Abdullah Yameen, currently serving an 11-year prison sentence for bribery and money laundering, is set to be transferred to his home today.
The Maldives Correctional Services (MCS) has initiated the process to move Yameen from his current confinement to his home in Male’ from Maafushi jail.
This decision comes in the wake of a plea made by President-elect Dr. Mohamed Muizzu, who emerged victorious in Saturday’s presidential election.
During his address to the nation following his electoral win, President-elect Muizzu made an appeal to President Ibrahim Mohamed Solih, requesting the transfer of Yameen to his home.
He stated, “I would like to ask President Ibrahim Mohamed Solih at this time very politely and sincerely to transfer our beloved President, President Yameen, home.”
As of now, the government has not released any official statement regarding the transfer, and the precise reasons behind Yameen’s release remain undisclosed.
