Young Man Dies Following Road Accident in Male’

A young man involved in a road accident in Male’ has died today, just days after being admitted to Indira Gandhi Memorial Hospital (IGMH) with severe injuries.

The accident occurred at the intersection of Boduthakurufaanu Magu and Koimalaa Hingun at 00:53 hrs on Thursday. The collision involved a car and a motorcycle. The victim, 21-year-old Mohamed Leevan Abdul Latheef, succumbed to his injuries while receiving treatment at IGMH.

Mohamed Leevan Abdul Latheef, from Jupiter, GDh. Gadhdhoo, was pronounced dead in the early hours of today. He had been undergoing treatment in the Intensive Care Unit (ICU) on a ventilator, but his condition deteriorated, resulting in his death. Reports indicate that he sustained critical injuries, leaving him brain dead, and his condition did not improve.

This fatal incident adds to a recent series of road accidents in the Maldivian capital. On Friday morning, 23-year-old Hassan Samah died after a speeding car crashed into him while he was riding his motorcycle near Central Park in Hulhumale’. The driver, who was unlicensed, is currently in custody pending trial.

Additionally, another accident occurred in Hulhumale’ Phase II yesterday morning, involving a motorcycle and a car, which left the motorcyclist with serious injuries. Last night, two people were injured in a collision between two motorcycles near the Villa Petrol Shed in Hulhumale’.

So far this year, police have reported 1,907 traffic accidents, an increase of 431 compared to the same period last year. This surge in incidents has raised significant concerns about road safety in the capital.
