Youth Unemployment in Maldives Hits 19%, Latest Statistics Show

The Bureau of Statistics has released its latest data, revealing that 19 percent of the young population in the Maldives is unemployed. 

This statistic, announced on World Population Day, highlights that one in five people aged 15-24 is not in education, training, or employment, amounting to 10,414 individuals.

According to the census conducted two years ago, the total population of the Maldives was recorded at 515,100, with 382,639 identified as Maldivians. The youth population, defined as those aged 15-24, stands at 53,537, with 26,006 residing in Male’ and 27,531 living on other islands.

The data shows that within this age group, 34.2 percent are still in education, while 34 percent are out of the labour force. Furthermore, 14.5 percent are neither in education nor part of the labour force, and 11.1 percent are both employed and studying. 

A smaller percentage, five percent, reported that they were neither studying not working, and 1.2 percent said they were studying but not working.
