In the midst of the ongoing presidential election campaign, independent candidate Hassan Zameel has stated that he has no plans to allocate resources for development projects in islands with fewer people than 1,000.

Zameel, who is running for the presidency this year, highlighted the considerable financial burden associated with ensuring uniform access to essential services across all localities.

Speaking exclusively on PSM News, Zameel reiterated his stance that it is fiscally challenging to extend equivalent basic amenities to all islands in the nation.

As such, he confirmed that government investments will not be directed towards the advancement of islands boasting a population size below 1,000 residents, if he assumed power.

“The equitable distribution of fundamental services throughout Maldives islands remains of paramount importance. However, it is not feasible to extend development uniformly to all such settlements,” Zameel asserted.

“Accordingly, governmental funds will not be allocated to islands with a population below the 1,000 mark.”

Moreover, Zameel emphasised his view that land allocation should transcend urban areas and encompass rural communities as well. In this regard, he articulated his intention to facilitate land provision to rural inhabitants residing within urban districts.
