This event marks his 56th exhibition, a milestone in a career that has consistently pushed the boundaries of artistic expression. The exhibition, a culmination of three years of dedicated work, invites viewers to immerse themselves in the intricate dialogues of the mind, exploring themes of mental well-being, emotion, and the enigmatic dance between chaos and control.
Afu’s Artistic Evolution: A Fusion of Technique and Concept
With 55 exhibitions, including 26 international showcases, Afu's dedication to exploring conceptuality in Maldivian art has earned him accolades both locally and globally. His latest endeavor, the solo exhibition titled "Nafs," represents a departure from traditional aesthetic techniques to a more immersive approach, invoking introspection and reflection.
In a conversation about his artistic evolution, Afu shared, “'Nafs' is a culmination of years of exploring not just the visual but the emotional and psychological aspects of human existence."
“Nafs” Exhibition: A Symphony of Emotions in Canvas and Form
The "Nafs" exhibition is a testament to his evolution as an artist. Divided into two series, 'Chaos and Control' and 'Living Well with Uncertainty,' the exhibition delves into the intricate dialogues within our minds. The exhibition, inspired by the challenges posed during the COVID-19 pandemic, has resulted in a profound exploration of mental well-being.
"In 'Chaos and Control,' I seek to unravel the complexities of human emotions and responses, portraying the sadness within our minds as well as our responses to it," Afu explained. "Meanwhile, 'Living Well with Uncertainty' draws metaphorical inspiration from the ocean, symbolizing the mystery and unpredictability of life. It's about navigating through uncertainties while acknowledging the raw, flawed nature of individuals."
A Fusion of Mediums: Paintings, Sculptures and Installations
"Nafs" not only showcases Afu's mastery in painting but also unveils a captivating fusion of sculptures and installations, creating a multi-dimensional experience that transcends conventional artistic norms.
The 'Uncertain Thoughts' sculptures, part of the series, capture thoughts in their raw format, accepting them without complications.
Afu described them, saying, "These sculptures stir a sense of nostalgia for the familiar and the mystery of what the future may hold. They represent the rawness of thoughts evolving from exposure to their surroundings, permeating the internal and external forces that decide identity and self-discovery."
A Symphony of Colors and Emotions: The Paintings of “Nafs”
The centerpiece, an installation named "Nafs," manifests an odyssey of thoughts, making the invisible tangible and confronting viewers with contradictory emotions. "In 'Nafs,' I wanted to depict contradictory emotions like happiness and sadness, surprise and disgust, confronting the viewer with their tangible solidity," Afu elaborated.
In the 'Chaos and Control' series, Afu's paintings are a visual exploration of the human emotional spectrum. The canvases dance with vibrant colors, portraying the ebb and flow of emotions. Each stroke seems to capture a moment of introspection, inviting viewers to connect with the universal experience of navigating the chaos within.
The 'Living Well with Uncertainty' series, inspired by the ocean, features paintings that evoke the mysterious depths of the sea. Deep blues and greens swirl together, creating a mesmerizing portrayal of life's unpredictability. Afu's paintings transcend the canvas, inviting viewers to dive into the uncertainty and find solace in the beauty of the unknown.
Afu’s Personal Journey and Influence on “Nafs”
Afu's personal journey, especially during the UK lockdown while pursuing his Master's, inspired his exploration of mental well-being through art. Observing widespread depression and anxiety, he found solace in his unique perspective, merging meditation with painting. This fusion led to a three-year focus on "Nafs," bringing forth happiness and peace in navigating life's challenges.
Reflecting on this journey, Afu shared, "During the lockdown, I observed the widespread impact on mental health. 'Nafs' became my way of expressing and navigating these challenges through art. It brought me happiness and peace amidst the chaos."
A Call for Artistic Advancement: Structured Learning for Aspiring Artists
In an insightful conversation, Afu shared his views on the Maldivian art scene. Despite the limited focus on art in schools, he commended the emergence of artists from educational institutions. Afu expressed a need for dedicated art schools, emphasizing the crucial role of a structured learning environment in fostering international artistic growth.
"Art is a field that requires study and progression. While many Maldivian artists are self-taught, a structured learning environment is crucial for international artistic growth," Afu emphasized. "The recent placement of art under the youth ministry is puzzling. Art, integral to a country's culture and heritage, deserves a separate ministry for its advancement."
Words of Wisdom for Emerging Artists
Afu, reflecting on his own journey, emphasized the importance of discipline in any career, including art. He urged aspiring artists to approach their craft with love and dedication, embracing the creative process. With abundant resources available online, he encouraged young artists to seize opportunities for self-improvement and learning.
"Discipline is key in any career, including art. Approach your craft with love and dedication. Embrace the creative process, and with discipline, you'll navigate the evolving landscape of art successfully," Afu advised.
Experiencing “Nafs”: A Unique Art Encounter
Afu hopes for a strong turnout at the exhibition, a rare event in the Maldives. Divided into two parts, "Nafs" offers a heightened experience with Gevorg Dabaghyan's music creating a slowed-down atmosphere for a deeper connection with the art. The exhibition runs from December 11th to 24th, open daily from 10 am to 10 pm (except Fridays, open from 4 pm to 10 pm).
Afu Shaafiu's "Nafs" exhibition stands as a testament to his artistic prowess and commitment to exploring the human experience. Through paintings, sculptures, and installations, Afu invites viewers to contemplate the complexities of mental well-being, offering a unique perspective that transcends traditional artistic boundaries. As "Nafs" unfolds its layers of emotion, it's an opportunity for art enthusiasts to engage with the profound narratives woven by Afu's masterful hands.
