North Thinadhoo MP Saudhulla Hilmy questioned the effectiveness of the local councils under the decentralized governance system. He argued that many people prefer the former system of having a selected island chief, chosen based on education and experience, over elected councillors, who may lack such qualifications. Hilmy proposed a compromise: electing the president and vice president of a local council, while selecting the remaining members through an application process.
