Two books on traditional Maldivian medicine, Raajje Bali and Assi Bali, were launched yesterday by long-time practitioner Uz. Adnan Yoosuf from Baa Kendhoo.

The event, held at Champa Central Hotel in Malé, marked a significant contribution to the preservation of indigenous medical knowledge.

The books were officially launched by former President Maumoon Abdul Gayoom, who attended the event with his children, Dunya, Yumna, and Faris Maumoon. The launch also coincided with Adnan Yoosuf’s 70th birthday, celebrating a lifetime dedicated to the practice of local medicine.

Adnan Yoosuf is not only known for his expertise in traditional medicine but also for his distinguished career in public service. He has held various roles, including serving as a judge in atoll courts, a member of the special parliament, and a teacher and supervisor at Aminiya School. From 1984 to 2018, he practised law, further adding to his diverse career.

Adnan has been instrumental in advancing traditional medicine in the Maldives. He was a leading figure in the formation of the Dhivehi Medical Practitioner’s Association and played a key role in conducting Dhivehi medicine courses in partnership with MI College. Between 2017 and 2022, he trained eight batches of students in these courses, ensuring the continuation of traditional medical practices.

The two newly launched books contain a collection of remedies and treatments for ailments such as strokes and arthritis, drawing from Adnan’s extensive knowledge passed down through generations. The remedies are sourced from his parents and grandparents, as well as various other local medicine texts from across the Maldives.

Speaking at the ceremony, President Gayoom expressed his gratitude to Adnan’s family for sharing these valuable works, emphasising the importance of preserving and documenting traditional knowledge. He noted that such efforts are essential for ensuring that indigenous practices continue to be passed down to future generations.

Adnan Yoosuf is currently working on additional books on Dhivehi medicine, further contributing to the preservation and dissemination of this important cultural heritage.
