The newly completed Masjid Mohamed Ali in Baa Eydhafushi officially opened last Thursday.

Rector of Villa College, Dr Ahmed Anwar, inaugurated the mosque, emphasising its unique design and his close relationship with the island. He described it as “the most perfect and beautiful mosque built to date,” praising its craftsmanship and expressing confidence it would become a major attraction, changing the island’s history.

Mohamed Ali, now 91 years old, had long dreamed of constructing a mosque on his island before his death. Four years ago, the practical work on the mosque began, with the support of Ali’s community.

The project also involved his sons, particularly Mubaah Rafeeu and Yaseen Rafeeu, whose contributions were recognised during the ceremony. Dr Anwar acknowledged Mubaah’s exceptional leadership and determination throughout the project, describing his efforts as an inspiration for others involved in similar endeavours.

The mosque, funded by Mohamed Ali, is a blend of Islamic architectural styles from around the world. Ali expressed his pride in bringing elements of global mosque designs to Eydhafushi, believing that it would transform the island’s history. The mosque’s design incorporates influences from Oman, Uzbekistan, Dubai, Saudi Arabia, and Turkey, with a particular focus on Turkish mosque architecture.

The two-story mosque can accommodate up to 1,200 worshippers, including a dedicated women’s prayer section and separate facilities. Ali’s relatives noted the challenges of the project, explaining that they travelled to various countries to study mosque designs, particularly those from Central Asia, which are reflected in the mosque’s structure.

The design of the mosque was carried out by a team from Turkey and Iran, including Aimaan Habeeb, Hassan Ziaadh, Mifaau Rasheedh of Mini Concept, and Ashraf Hameed of Alaf Pvt Ltd. The mosque is renowned for its striking Persian style, which is particularly admired for its aesthetic appeal.

Although Mohamed Ali is now confined to a wheelchair, he attended the opening ceremony, overcome with emotion. His tears were a reflection of his satisfaction in leaving behind a lasting legacy—a beautiful mosque that will preserve his name and story for future generations.
