Urban Gardening at Billabong High International
In collaboration with the Ministry of Fisheries Marine Resources and Agriculture, Billabong High International School established urban gardening in the school premises to familiarize its students with agriculture and guarantee food security. It also allows students and community groups to learn sustainable and self sufficient growing techniques.
It is also notable that instead of powerful, toxic fertilizers, this program mainly employs organic compost, including organic fertilizers made from household waste.
The urban gardening program at this school is also testament that big spaces are not needed for agriculture, and that it can be done in limited spaces in city living.
Growing even a small portion of your food consumption not only saves money, but it is educational and sustainable for the environment. And it is certainly a value we need to instill in our younger generations.
