Faathun, the Gardening Entrepreneur

Fathimath Nizaar, 56-year-old farmer, first started planting chilies, “Kopee faiy”, mint, curry leaves and many more at home, on her roof, without using any chemicals. She also noted that during Ramazan, she did not go to the local market to buy any produce but used her own crops to cook.
She has now made this lovely hobby into a business.

During the COVID-19 pandemic, she noticed that flower plants were getting popular and in demand, she thought to start planting different flowers to sell. Now, flower plants and crops like chilies, mint and “Kopee faiy” can be seen growing on pots and beds on top of her roof.

Faathun mentioned that different plants take different times to grow so she has to keep note of all the different plants. She noted that there are a lot of different problems she faces while doing this work. The biggest issue she faces is not being able to get the required medicines and materials for farming, and not having any space to expand her business. She mentioned that the government could provide small areas and materials for people who would like to start farming, as a lot of people looking to start a business have no space or are not financially capable of buying all the materials and medicines needed for farming.

Fathimath mentioned that this is an exciting and addicting work to do and if anyone starts farming, they cannot stop but will want to learn more about this field.
