Boardroom; the Local Literature and Recreation Club

MV Plus | September 27, 2021

Boardroom MV, a passion project by a group of local friends, provides a safe space for bookworms, nerds, boardgame enthusiasts and aficionados of all things fantastical. Boardroom has now opened its own library called ShelfQuest, a book rental service in Hulhumale’, in its pilot phase.

The four founders recall that they’ve all had a dream of opening a library at some point in their lives. One of its four founders, Maanu, describes himself as coming from a “family of readers. Coming from a family of avid readers, Maanu grew up with his nose buried deep in books of all genres. Soon, he ran out of reading material at home and became a staple sight in the local bookshops. He could be found in the aisles, standing for hours, lost in a book, reading as much as he could before being shooed out.

It was because of his social anxiety as a child, he found the library in the Maldives “too formal” and would often sneak into shops to read books from there.

The group also encourages “misfits,” the different, and the neurodivergent to visit the club to find companionship and like-minded individuals.
The local literature and recreation club offers a space to hang out that is more casual and organic, to play boardgames, read, and chill out in addition to ShelfQuest.

ShelfQuest currently boasts more than 1000 books in its inventory. The group has worked tirelessly the past couple of months to launch the library in Hulhumale’, from cataloguing the books to shelfing them.

Boardroom will also have a men-free Saturday in the future, for the women who feel uncomfortable mingling with men for any reason; reiterating that they run a safe place.

Boardroom also does a book delivery service where customers can select a book they wish to borrow online, for a fee.
