MDP Primary Election Begins Today
Primary elections have begun today morning for the main ruling Maldivian Democratic Party (MDP), with over 57,000 eligible voters across the country. A total of 283 ballots have been placed on several islands.
Speaker of Parliament Mohamed Nasheed and President Ibrahim Mohamed Solih are contesting for the ticket to run for the presidency in the general elections, later this year.
The two candidates have already cast their voting. Speaking to reporters this morning, President Solih expressed confidence saying he hopes to win with a double-digit difference.
Responding to a reporter about election rigging, he says, “I don’t think any attempt to rig the election will occur.”
Today’s primary is said to be the most competitive election in the party’s history. This primary also marks the historic event where a sitting president is running in a primary for re-election.
While polling began this morning at 9AM, ballots are scheduled to close this evening at 5PM.
