Mohamed Husham’s Journey as a Project Manager at STO
At just 31 years old, Mohamed Husham has carved out a significant role as a Project Manager at the State Trading Organisation (STO), a state-owned enterprise pivotal to the Maldives’ infrastructure and economy.
With more than a decade of experience under his belt, Husham has become a vital player in managing and executing complex projects that serve communities across the archipelago.
“I oversee various projects assigned by management and heads of departments from start to finish, ensuring they align with the objectives,” Husham says of his role.
He manages both repair projects and the construction of new facilities, including showrooms and pharmacies. Currently, he’s overseeing the development of fifteen pharmacies across the country.
His work involves directing a team of project coordinators, meticulously planning and managing budgets, and ensuring that each project adheres to strict quality and safety standards. It’s a demanding job, but one that Husham approaches with dedication and a calm resolve.
Husham joined STO twelve years ago as an officer in the administrative department, where he was responsible for processing internal requests for materials required by the in-house projects team. This initial exposure to the inner workings of project management piqued his interest, leading him to pursue it and move up the ranks to his current position
“STO was my first job after completing my diploma at university, and I have been with the organisation ever since,” he says. “During these 12 years, I completed my bachelor’s and master’s degrees, all on a company scholarship,” he adds.
He also receives industry-related trainings every year, further enhancing his expertise and keeping him updated with the latest developments in his field.
Managing projects in the Maldives, a geographically dispersed nation, presents unique challenges. “One of the most challenging aspects of my job is managing projects in the atolls while being based in Male’,” Husham shares. The distance necessitates regular check-ins with staff on the islands, demanding that he stay on top of every detail to ensure smooth progress.
This ability to remain flexible and proactive is a key lesson Husham has learned throughout his career, and it’s something he applies to every new project.
In a state-owned company like STO, where public accountability is paramount, aligning projects with organizational goals is critical. “We ensure alignment by thoroughly understanding our objectives for each project, involving key stakeholders in the planning process, and consistently monitoring progress,” Husham says. This meticulous approach ensures that every project not only meets its objectives but also adheres to STO’s rigorous standards.
“We prioritize clear and regular communication, setting expectations from the beginning,” Husham emphasizes when discussing his coordination with internal teams, external contractors, and vendors. This strategy ensures seamless collaboration and keeps everyone on the same page, even when unexpected challenges arise.
Despite the pressures and challenges, it’s clear that Husham thrives in his role. “I enjoy working under pressure, and there’s a healthy amount of pressure with every project,” he admits. “I don’t have a fixed daily work routine, and I like that every day brings a fresh challenge.” It’s this constant variety and the sense of achievement upon completing a project that Husham finds most rewarding.
Looking back on his 12-year journey with STO, Husham is proud of how far he has come. “Everything I’ve learned, I’ve learned here,” he reflects, acknowledging the opportunities and experiences that have shaped him both personally and professionally.
As Mohamed Husham continues to take on new projects and challenges, his story is one of growth, adaptability, and an unwavering commitment to excellence—qualities that have made him an invaluable asset to STO and the communities he serves.
